User Guide: Category/Subcategory Reorganization
User Guide: Category/Subcategory Reorganization
Release: 1.4.0
Overview
The Category/Subcategory Reorganization restructures how Physical Security Incidents (PSI) and Physical Security Operations (PSO) are categorized in the Bearing application. The goal is cleaner grouping, better alignment between category type and record type (incident vs. operation), and a more logical structure for selecting and reporting on security events.
Note: No data has been deleted. Old categories have been made inactive, so existing records retain their original categories. Only new records are affected.

Changes in Detail
Categories Removed from PSI (No Longer Available for New Records)
Facility Security - Severe Weather (now under Critical Event)
- Severe weather is an emergency event, not routine facility security
- Use the new Critical Event - Severe Weather subcategory instead
Facility Security - Suspicious Activity (removed)
- Redundant with other categories
- The Investigations category better covers suspicious activity reports
New Category Added to PSI
Critical Event - Severe Weather (NEW)
Use this subcategory when creating a PSI for:
- Hurricanes, tornadoes, or severe storms
- Weather-related emergencies
- Environmental hazards requiring emergency response
Before: PSI Type: Facility Security → Severe Weather After: PSI Type: Critical Event → Severe Weather
Subcategories Moved from PSI to PSO
These activities are planned operations, not incidents, and have been moved accordingly:
System Installation - Now a PSO category
- Use a Physical Security Operation record for tracking system installation work
Testing - Now a PSO category
- Use a Physical Security Operation record for planned testing activities
Subcategories Hidden from PSI
The following subcategories are no longer available for new PSI records. They were removed because they represent service requests or planned operations rather than incidents:
Under Facility Security:
- Lock/Unlock Procedure (use a service request)
- Secure Area Access (use a service request)
- Security Escort (use a service request)
Under Investigations:
- Report Request (use a service request)
- Security Assisted Termination (planned operation, use PSO)
- Security Support (use a service request)
- Violation
Under Physical Security Systems:
- Additional subcategories now hidden or moved
